Chickens, eggs, acorns and plans

18.05.18

I have been gifted a humble acorn. I woke up this morning and before brushing my teeth or getting dressed (but after breakfast, of course) I applied for jobs with gusto.

The good thing about being a writer is the ability to quickly write job applications. I have two interviews set up next week. This relieves my fears somewhat. Fears like this:

I've also been thinking about time. Sometimes we have to make time, to create time. To plan. Like writing to-do lists or scheduling for the future. Updating these things that manage our life takes time, but they help us get the most out of every precious second.

Today I took forty minutes out of my day to go for a run, and that's where I found this acorn. When the running gets hard I do push ups - they may attract stares but they also attract muscles - I know which ones I'd rather have. Taking this time makes the rest of my day better.

Since July last year I have been steadily going through my to-do list in preparation for this move. Some things were difficult, like waiting for the right moment to tell my boss and booking accommodation in India. One of the hardest things was ordering blinds for my rental property - the cats had destroyed the last ones.

Full of fear and dreading this unpleasant task, I put on my big girl pants, pulled out the measuring tape and sent off orders. But after much procrastination. It took four weeks to find a company that could deliver in that size and it was getting down to the wire. Because of my to-do list, the task glowed ominously with an incomplete status each time I checked it.

I don't check my to-do list every day, sometimes I holiday from "doing things." But it helps. I'm a pretty ditsy person; if I can improve my focus, anyone can.

Chickens and eggs. Which one comes first? Apparently proof of address, a UK bank account and a National Insurance Number all need to come first, at once. And you can't have one without the other. I'm finding this navigation a little tricky, if truth be said.

I've also been thinking about purpose. Do you have a purpose? Purpose is like the vision behind your plan.

I'm actually talking about project management here, which is so applicable to life. We are our own projects.

I wrote my purpose statement recently after someone sent me this video:

How to find your purpose in life, Dr Robert Quinn

What is your purpose? Below are some inspirational people who have helped me find mine.

Changing unfair rules?

Australian Council of Trade Union Change the Rules supporters

Being a champion athlete?

Livia Gluchowska

Being a voice for those who have no voice?

James Aspey
Sacrificing everything to help cats?

Natasha Reus

I'm writing this to drill my own purpose into my brain harder.

If I'm lucky I'll find a job that does more than just pay the bills - if I'm lucky I'll find one that gives me purpose.

I hope that you have purpose too.
